  • Should every social media manager be under 25? Yes, argues a young writer for Nextgen Journal with no experience in the role and still struggling to achieve financial independence from her (clearly over 25) parents.
    • Transparency kudos to Nextgen Journal for also posting this well written rebuttal by Mark Story, someone with actual experience in the field.
  • Valve’s Gabe Newell has a pretty negative take on Windows 8 and is hedging appropriately.
  • Similarly, Fortune outlines their take on the future of videogames and videogame hardware.
  • Twitter is targeting big advertisers with a pretty slick pitch deck.
  • A look back at a rough year for Netflix.
    • More bad news: Consumer Reports released a report detailing customer satisfaction for streaming video services and Netflix was rated very poorly.
  • RadioShack is a victim of its own iPhone strategy success.

  • Oh no she didn’t!  Remember that unflattering photo of you that your friend posted on Facebook?  Apparently it was deliberate.
  • Google offended some attendees at their recent women in technology conference, Google I/O, by not offering event t-shirts in women’s sizes.
  • After a blogger started a Kickstarter project to explore female stereotypes in video games, she was attacked by a hoard of internet trolls. Undeterred, she fought back, gained strength from the increased publicity and funded her project.  Ultimately, we agree with this dude, it is time to stand up against this sort of behavior on the internet, just as we would in real life.
  • Recent studies suggest that women may face an increased risk of breast cancer after IVF treatment.  In related news, the first woman to successfully receive such treatment passed away this week.

  • The ladies can’t seem to get enough of Channing Tatum’s hot dance routine from his recently released movie, Magic Mike.
  • If you enjoyed that, here’s a question for you: Would you be willing to trade your favorite earrings for the first person experience? (Got to love the stack of dollars and jewelry in front of the guys).
  • Someone took their fantasy of living in a doll house a bit too far.
  • The latest video from Amy Poehler’s web series, Smart Girls at the Party, features a 14-year-old female boxer who teaches Amy a few tricks. If you happen to know a young woman with talent, Amy invites all interested parties to send her a silly application video.

  • Company develops innovative method for managing malware attacks by constraining the infection to a virtual node.
  • Cable companies are enhancing their ability to insert more diverse advertising into On Demand television.  Unfortunately, one cable executive states, “The addition of dynamically inserted ads into VOD actually results in a much better user experience… more like linear TV.”  Uh… no.  No one except cable company executives will feel their user experience will be better with additional linear-style ads.
  • U.S Olympic Committee vastly underestimates the digital vengeance of the connected Knitting community.

  • A video was posted to YouTube documenting abusive children bullying a bus monitor (Warning: this video is NSFW-language, will make you sick to your stomach and possibly force you doubt the future of the human race). In response, the internet raised $400,000 for her to go on vacation and retire.

  • Rights and royalties finally sorted out for indie musicians whose work appears on Vevo, the music video streaming service.
  • Mozilla releases Thimble, a simple side-by-side web design tool.  Note to parents: With slickly implemented gamification applied to their Projects feature, this is a great starting point for children (or anyone really).
  • Everything you need to know about Microsoft’s new tablet device, Surface, in a well-edited 90 second video from Gizmodo.  The case-as-keyboard thing is pretty cool.

  • Can Arsenio Hall mount a successful return to talk show television?  Maybe, although I wouldn’t count on seeing Mitt Romney with a saxophone any time soon.
